Paper 3 Analysis

In English W131 we have been talking about the many ways that images can be viewed and what the deeper meaning is in them. There was one source that I am using in my paper that can be viewed many ways. The Dove beauty commercial is one can be viewed as a benefit and as a flaw in the advertising. When they are showing the many stages that it takes to make a women look billboard ready, they are showing that there product does not work. Instead they are showing you how good they are in Photoshop the many things they do to create the beauty illusion. They had another video that showed how the younger generation is going to be affected by the beauty brands and their advertising. When they get sucked into the standards that are set by billboards and magazines then they will not be happy with whom they are. The moral of the second video is that you should be happy with who you are and not let other people tell you what you have to look like. If you let others tell you what you have to look like then that could lead to more than looks. People might want to take total control of you and tell you what to do all the time, kind of like parents J. In the end they want you to be who you are and not someone that other people have made you. This does not mean that people cannot have an influence on your life but they should not be ones that are controlling all choices in your life. Dove wants you to be your own person and know that you do not need make up you are beautiful but if you want make up then you should buy it from them.

  1. I totally agree with your post Shray. I sometimes feel degraded when I look at a beauty commercials because I feel like I am not as pretty as the models in the commercial. That is the ultimate goal of advertising agencies. They want people to feel ugly until they buy their product. This is sad but true. I also agree with your words of wisdom: be yourself.

  2. I really liked how you synthesized both images in this prompt. The way they tie together is really important because it reinforces your overall message. I also enjoyed at the beginning of the prompt where you said the commercial showed the products do not even work. I had never thought of it this way because you are right!

  3. Agreed. I feel as though we as young people are in debt to each other. We buy expensive/brand-named clothes, nice cars, luxury perfumes, ten different shoes, etc. to impress others. Rather, we could have bought something cheaper with the same functionality. Some dedicate their whole life just to impress people, and then there are those who don't even care what other people think.

  4. I really like your thought on this! I chose to write about the same source in my paper and definitely think this will be easy to expand on and talk about more in your paper. its a unique look at women and it was nice how you took away such an important message about women.
