The photos of a man in a pinup pose shows many things. It
shows how “silly” the poses are in general, and that it is not right for it to
be expected of women to pose like that. It also can be related to the fact that
you don’t know who you are dealing with online anymore. A guy could act like a
girl and portray themselves differently and you would be none the wiser. One
essentially can reinvent themselves online and people must be wary of it. This
photo in particular I believe was mainly meant as humor and to show the
ridiculousness of the poses in general. It starts begging the question as to
why women posing like that are so prevalent in social media and the current
culture. These images and cultural ideas
are not showing the truth of each person. Women don’t pose like that on
average, and it is showing how our society Is trying to portray women.
The visual
itself I believe is targeting older people. I believe this because some
children and teens won’t be aware of the message and humor that it conveys. I
don’t believe that the image could be as effective as it really could be. The
pose that the man model is using could be much closer to the over sexualized
pinup poses that are common. The slightly sexualized images don’t hold near as
much power and voice as a dramatically over done one. This makes the visual
lend itself more to humor then to an actual message being sent. With how easy it is to portray yourself
different then you really are in today’s society, it would be far more
effective to show the men in more feminine poses. The photo appeals to our
sense of equality, because it is trying to show how weird it would be if guys
were in the poses and that we shouldn’t see it as natural for women to be in
them.
I also see how this post is aimed more toward humor than for a dramatic message. If the poses were more provocative this would insinuate more of a statement than the slightly humorous poses.
ReplyDeleteI think the picture is made to be humorous. But i think the way the men are dressed show another type of gender stereotypes. Every man is wearing and holding something "manly". That is a gender stereotype just as much as the poses are. The message is more subtle as you said, but there are underlying ideas like what the men are wearing being additionally stereotypical that many who get the sexism of the pinup still wouldn't understand.
