Prompt 3

Has technology caused us to lose a sense of being yourself? Throughout paper three this is the question that I am trying to answer. The movie Catfish really opened my eyes to the problems that we face in our society when it comes to technology and our identities. Angela was able to log on and become other people. While the names, and people where actually real it wasn’t them talking to Nev. Angela was able to go into another world and live out her ideal life. I don’t agree with what Angela did but I see why she would. She lived in a house where she had to take care of two boys who weren’t able to do anything for themselves. Angela had big dreams as a child see wanted to become a dancer, and live a more exciting life, but that never happened for her. Angela found it as a release or a break from life to log onto Facebook and lie. Angela wasn’t being herself when she logged onto Facebook, she became a more “perfect” Angela. Angela was playing on Facebook the way kids play with dolls in a doll house. In those doll houses you can become anything you want to be. The dolls take on any role that your imagination can create, a “perfect” life. But as Angela played with her dolls online that wasn’t her, technology gave Angela a way to be a kid again and play with dolls but in real life. Through this she tricked Nev into believing that this girl named Megan existed who would put up with his body hair. Nev was also tricked into believing that this little girl named Abby was an inspiring artist who had her own art gallery. Angela’s dolls reeled Nev all the way to Michigan to find out that everything was a lie. Technology gave Angela a new way to lie and live her life but Angela wasn’t being Angela.

  1. I like how you started out with a question. I agree with you and the understanding of why Angela would do what she did. I also agree that it was in no way right for her to do this.

  2. This provides an interesting way to look at how Angela hasn't changed since she was a kid playing with dolls and giving them identities she wish she had. Her adult life reflects this in her still having the dollhouse and using fake identities.

  3. I believe people really do use technology to hide their true selves. This has been the burning topic in my papers this semester. I think it goes to show technology is not as beautiful as many people see it.

  4. I feel that technology has ruined the values for this generation. What was valued in he past, before social media, is definitely different then what is valued now. Technology has warped people into robots and people lose their true selves in the process.
